The Grand Hôtel is and has always been an important part of the Nobel Prize Awards. From 1901 to 1929 the hotel was not just the Laureates’ home. It was also the scene of the great Nobel Banquet, which took place in the magnificent Spegelsalen. There were only four Laureates in the first year: Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen in physics, Jacobus van’t Hoff in chemistry, Emil von Behring in medicine and physiology and Sully Prudhomme in literature.
Over the years both the number of prize-winners and guests grew. In 1929, the year when Thomas Mann was awarded the literature prize, the banquet was held at the Grand Hôtel for the last time. Because of the need for more space the organizers were forced to move the event to the Stockholm City Hall the following year. Find out more about the history of the Nobel Laureates.
